Indonesia is a country with various transportation. In Surabaya, where Petra Christian University is located, there are several options of transportation. Surabaya people drives car and motorcycle as their daily transportation from place to place. In Surabaya, both car and motorcycle are deemed as private vehicle and many citizens own them. As for the local public transportation, the city of Surabaya has:
- Becak (Rickshaw, it is the picture on the top page)
- Pick-up Service
The fares for bus, bemo, and becak range from IDR 2,500 (USD 2) to IDR 10,000 (USD 10) for 1 sitting depends on the distance. When riding bus, bemo, or becak you say “Kiri, Pak!” (“Left, sir!”) when you feel you have reached your destination because the driver usually will stop as per request. The more convenient public transportation is taxi. Around Petra you can find Silver Taxi standing by near the W canteen.
Surabaya also has Pick-up Service or Anjem aka Antar Jemput, it is a public car that will take you around Surabaya by request. If you prefer Anjem, you need to have the contact number of the service provider, contact them prior to departure (usually 3 to 1 day before departure date) to schedule an appointment and discuss the fare. If the Anjem provider agrees to pick you up, you have to be ready on time because, as the term ‘public transportation’ implies, you are not gonna be the one and only passenger on the car.
